€6.7 Million Investment in Embellishment and Maintenance Works of Social Housing Buildings

720 families across 13 localities to benefit from this investment

Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue and Accommodation, Dr Andy Ellul, announced this year’s work plan for the regeneration of social housing buildings across 13 localities.

Dr Ellul announced that this project will be carried out in various localities across Malta and Gozo, with a total investment of almost €7 million. He also announced that a total of 720 families living in more than 100 social housing buildings will benefit from this project.

During a press conference in Żejtun, Parliamentary Secretary Dr Ellul revealed that the largest of these projects is in Żejtun. Upon completion, works will result in the regeneration of 16 buildings, with nearly 100 families benefiting from these embellishment and maintenance works. Families in Żejtun social housing blocks will benefit from a total investment of €882,000.

Other regeneration works will also be carried out in 6 residential blocks in Għaxaq, with a total of 54 families benefitting from an investment of over €600,000.

The Parliamentary Secretary also announced that works will be carried out in Santa Luċija, benefiting nearly 60 families. The quality of life for 55 families in Gżira, 18 families in Kalkara, and a further 128 families in Rabat, Gozo, will also be improved through this investment. Upgrading and maintenance works will also be carried out in buildings in Attard and Luqa. Dr Ellul added that works are also underway on an additional 42 buildings in Marsa, Paola, Marsascala, Ta’ Xbiex, and Mosta.

During the press conference, Dr Ellul said that while the Government remains committed to investing in additional social housing properties, it also believes in continuing maintenance projects to address existing issues without delay. He emphasised that dignity is not only about having a roof over one’s head, but also about living in a decent environment that enhances the residents’ quality of life.

“We are clearly showing that, for the Government, social housing is of central importance in terms of social justice, community environment, and quality of life,” said Parliamentary Secretary Andy Ellul. He reiterated the message that the Government is sending through such projects: that every resident and every community should be given the importance they deserve. Dr Ellul renewed the Government’s commitment, stating that in the coming months and years, the regeneration of housing properties will continue as part of its vision to invest in people and communities.

Parliamentary Secretary Andy Ellul concluded by stating that these social housing properties are not only buildings but represent a community that deserves a stable and dignified environment.

Work on these projects will include façade restoration, improvements to building entrances, infrastructure upgrades where necessary, and enhancements to common spaces.

This project goes hand in hand with several other projects that the Government is prioritising to keep on improving people’s quality of life.
