Housing Authority Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary Through Art

As the Housing Authority marks fifty years since its establishment on Sunday, 11 October, an art exhibition entitled Malta’s Urban and Social Spaces was inaugurated on Friday, 9 October, at the Italian Cultural Institute in Valletta.

While housing and art may appear to be two distinct concepts, both are ultimately about people and the places in which they live their lives. It was this connection that inspired Malta’s Urban and Social Spaces, an exhibition that invited artists to explore the meaning of home, community and belonging through their own perspectives. The initiative brings together established artists, emerging talent and art students to reflect on Malta’s urban and social landscape.

The exhibition will feature 34 artworks selected through a competition launched by the Housing Authority, each offering its own interpretation of Malta’s urban and social spaces. Through different artistic styles and perspectives, the works explore the places and communities that shape our everyday lives, inviting visitors to reflect on the meaning of home and belonging.

Five of the artworks have been selected to appear on official commemorative stamps in collaboration with MaltaPost. In addition, a selection of these works will become part of the Intergenerational Housing residence in Valletta. These artworks will become part of a living community, leaving a lasting legacy that extends well beyond the exhibition and the anniversary celebrations.

The exhibition will be open to the public at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Valletta from Saturday, 10 October to Friday, 16 October 2026, between 9:00 am and 8:00 pm, except on Monday, 12 October, when it will open at 2:30 pm.
