Housing Authority Stairlift Funding Improving Home Accessibility in Malta

PRESS RELEASE BY THE MINISTRY FROM THE MINISTRY FOR SOCIAL AND AFFORDABLE ACCOMMODATION

Scheme for Persons with Disability now approves more than one stairlift application per day on average.

Since the launch of this housing authority scheme 3,000 applications for stairlifts have been approved, with an investment of more than €18 million.

During a press conference, Minister for Social and Affordable Accommodation Roderick Galdes announced that at the end of August, more than €4.5 million have been invested for the funding of stairlifts.

The main objective of this scheme is to help people with disabilities or mobility challenges enhance accessibility in their homes, supporting independent or semi-independent living.

Between 2023 and 2025, more than 1,600 stairlifts were approved in various residences in Malta and Gozo. In fact, 454 applications have already been approved this year. As a result, the scheme now approves an average of more than one stairlift application per day.

“Providing services like this scheme allows elderly and those with mobility needs to continue living in their communities and homes, enhancing both mobility and quality of life.” said Minister Galdes.

Administered by the Housing Authority, the scheme provides financial assistance of up to €7,000 for the installation of a stairlift.

The CEO of the Housing Authority, Matthew Zerafa, stated that the Housing Authority, through its initiatives, is ensuring that people continue to live with dignity and independence in the communities in which they were raised.
